SkinPen microneedling: what to expect
20 September 2026. From The Face Workshop. 4 minute read.
SkinPen microneedling is used for acne scarring, for texture, and for firmness. It is a course treatment rather than a single appointment, and most of what determines the result is the planning around it rather than the hour in the chair.
How the course is structured
A course runs to between three and six sessions, spaced four weeks apart, and is reviewed at the halfway point. The review matters. Four weeks is roughly how long skin takes to turn over, so the halfway point is the first moment at which there is real information to look at rather than an impression to react to. If the plan needs changing, that is where it changes.
What happens in a session
- The area is cleansed and photographed, so that progress can be measured rather than remembered.
- Topical anaesthetic is applied and left for the time it needs.
- Controlled passes are made with the SkinPen device, at a depth chosen for the area and for the indication.
- A post-procedure conditioning layer is applied, then cooling.
The photograph at the start of every session is not a formality. Skin changes slowly and memory is generous. A set of images taken in the same light, from the same angle, at the same point in a course, is the only honest way to tell whether something is working.
Anaesthetic is left for the time it needs rather than the time that is convenient. Rushing it is the most common reason a session is less comfortable than it should be.
Afterwards
Expect redness for 24 to 48 hours. Avoid active skincare for five days. Active here means the products you would describe as doing something: acids, retinoids, anything you would not put on a graze. Plain cleansing, a moisturiser that supports the barrier, and sun protection are the whole routine for those five days.
What it does to scarring
Scarring is softened and evened rather than removed. That distinction is the single most useful thing to hold on to before you start. A scar that has been softened and evened reads as texture rather than as a mark, and in ordinary light that is a substantial difference. It is not the same as the skin never having been scarred, and no course of microneedling produces that.
Setting that expectation at the start is also what makes the halfway review useful. If the target is even texture, the review can answer whether the texture is evening. If the target is removal, the review has no honest answer available.
Timing against active acne
Treating scarring while acne is still active is generally uncomfortable and less productive, so we usually wait. That is not a delay for its own sake. Active acne means the surface is changing week to week, which makes the measurement unreliable, and it means the treatment is being done on skin that is already irritated. Settling the acne first shortens the scarring course more often than it lengthens the overall timeline.
Cost
A full-face session is £189, and the appointment includes a consultation. An additional small area, such as the neck, décolletage or hands, adds £50. The consultation is also where we work out whether a course is the right thing for you at all.
Suitability, depth and the number of sessions are decided at consultation, in person, for your skin.
